Bird Watching Spots in Highlands, NC

One of the best ways to learn about birding in a new area is to check out a local Audubon Society. Our region is part of the Highlands Plateau Audubon Society, which provides resources and events for visitors to learn about birds and wildlife. Check out what events are happening during your visit and join local birders on a field trip. Or head out on your own and use this checklist to find the birds frequently spotted at these locations:

Highlands Botanical Garden

Start your adventure at the Highlands Botanical Gardens and look for birds while exploring the diverse ecosystems of this 12-acre nature preserve. The Biological Station is also a bird banding site, which helps local scientists understand bird populations and contributes to conservation efforts. You are welcome to observe this process during your visit and ask questions about the process.

Sunset Rock Trail

Access the Sunset Rock Trail, located across from the Biological Station, for additional fantastic bird-watching opportunities nearby. Hike up to the top and be rewarded with panoramic views of Highlands and the perfect vantage point to see birds fly by.

Whiteside Mountain

Whiteside Mountain is not only one of the best hiking trails in the region, but it is also a fantastic spot for bird-watching. During the springtime, Peregrine Falcons can be seen on top of the rock face, and in September, you can spot several hawks.
