Highlands, North Carolina, is one of the best places in the state for chasing waterfalls. And summer is the perfect time to see them. Drive along the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway and spend a perfect summer day at one of our local falls. Many of our falls have swimming holes where you can cool off and rocks to slide down for added fun. It’s an outing the whole family can enjoy. Stay with Highlands Vacation Rentals this summer and start exploring these North Carolina waterfalls.
Bust Your Butt Falls aka Quarry Falls
Soak up the sunshine and slide down the rocks of Bust Your Butt Falls this summer. (Just be careful not to bust your butt doing it.) This local waterfall offers a natural slide, where you can literally slide down rocks and splash into the swimming hole below. There is also a jump-off rock, where you can dive into the water.
Be careful as you navigate the rocks and check the water level to make sure it’s safe to swim or jump before you visit.
Secret Falls
If you want to get away from the crowds, Secret Falls is the perfect summer destination. The parking area is a bit hidden, so we recommend using the directions from Romantic Asheville to find the falls. Once you have arrived at the parking area, you will hike a half mile through the woods before you reach the 50-foot waterfall. After your hike in, take a dip at the idyllic swimming hole at the base of the falls and cool off.
Cashiers Sliding Rock
Cashiers Sliding Rock is another great place to slide during the summer. It’s a great option for families, since it’s just a short hike and shallower than other falls. Slide down with your family into the swimming hole at the base. Bring a picnic and enjoy your meal on the rocks while enjoying the sights and sounds of the falls.
Silver Run Falls
Silver Run Falls is a favorite spot for families in the area. The 25-foot waterfall cascades into a tranquil pool that’s calm enough for kids to swim, and there’s a small beach area for them to play as well.
Dry Falls
If you want to see a large and powerful waterfall during your summer vacation, we recommend Dry Falls. This beautiful 75-foot waterfall cascades over a cliff and offers several scenic overlooks. Walk behind the waterfall and feel the cool spray against your skin on a hot summer day. Keep in mind, there is no swimming available here.
